First Maltby Triathlon Hailed A Success

Around 130 athletes entered the first Maltby Triathlon on Sunday May 14. The event was based at Maltby Leisure Centre which is managed on behalf of Rotherham Council by Places for People Leisure.

The social enterprise company teamed up with HUUB Events to organise the triathlon -drawing on their wide experience of running various triathlon, running and cycling events across the UK - including the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon which will be held in Derby again this July.

The event was designed with two different distances – making it ideal for novice, improver and experienced triathletes.

The Sprint distance was the ultimate challenge - consisting of a 400m indoor pool swim (16 lengths), a 24km bike ride on country lanes around Stainton and Braithwell and a 5km run around the neighbourhood, finishing at  Manor Fields.

The Super Sprint event was half the distance - 200m/12km/2.5km – making it ideal for novice competitors.

Meanwhile, a free duathlon event was organised for children aged five to fourteen.  This was a run-bike-run on the playing fields outside the leisure centre – giving young people the chance to try out the sport whilst the triathlon is taking place.

Claire Duffin, Race Director at HUUB Events said: “The first Maltby Triathlon was a fantastic day of sport and I hope that we will be back next year.

“Maltby Leisure Centre was the perfect venue for this event. It is centrally placed with great transport links to the M18, A1 and M1 and the leisure centre has fantastic pool facilities.

“The surrounding country lanes were undulating but fast and the Manor Academy Fields were ideal for the running leg for the triathlon with plenty of space for spectators to cheer on the competitors as they raced towards the finish line.

“This was designed to encourage people to have a go at triathlon but equally to attract local triathlon clubs and more experienced athletes from further afield which is exactly what happened.

“We have had some great feedback on social media and I am particularly pleased that around half of the starting field were people who were doing their first triathlon.

“We were fortunate to have some great local volunteers who worked incredibly hard throughout the day and local community came out in force to cheer everyone on.

“I therefore want to thank everyone who got involved – whether as an athlete, marshall or spectator in making this such a fantastic day.”

Comments about the event have been posted on www.racecheck.com.

They included first timer Hayley Brown who wrote: “This was my first triathlon and I was nervous to say the least. The whole HUUB Team were spot on, answering the many questions we asked on the hints and tips session on the Saturday. The triathlon was very well organised and the marshals were supportive throughout. I can't find anything that would need improving, an amazing experience. Thank you to all involved.”

Fellow novice David Shepherd posted:

David Shepherd Shepherd: “Entered this event as it was local. Hoping for a reasonable morning. Better than expectations. The event team were welcoming, friendly and efficient. The swim venue, indeed the whole venue was first class. The bike course was quick with some nice short, sharp climbs, but straight roads in the main. The run course of two laps in the residential area had spectators to cheer you on. A successful day. Will be back again if this venue is used.”
