Young players from Mickleover Cricket Club will be donning their kit to take part in the ‘Great Northern’ running event in the Derby suburb on Sunday March 6.
The ‘Great Northern’ half marathon, 10K and 2K is being organised for the first time this year by Derby-based HUUB Events in partnership with Mickleover Cricket Club. Funds raised will support the club’s junior section with equipment and training costs as well as for Mesothelioma UK which supports people with asbestos cancer.
The 10k and half marathon courses will take place on the country lanes between Mickleover and Hilton and then back to Mickleover Sports Club on Station Road via the disused Great Northern railway line. Meanwhile the 2k Family Fun Run will focus on the footpath.
Among the cricketers supporting the event is Stuart Rance (10) who is wicket keeper and batsman for the club’s under 11 team.
He said: “I am looking forward to the 2K and a lot of us will be running in our whites and kit. I hope it won’t slow us down too much as we all want to get a good time.”
Mickleover Cricket Club committee member Stuart Walker continued: “All the club is behind this event and we hope to raise a good amount of money.
“Players in both the senior and junior teams are taking part or marshalling the event and we hope that members of other clubs in the city and county will also join in the fun and don their cricket kit for the extra challenge.
“We have a thriving cricket club with around 100 players of all ages competing in our senior and junior teams.
“The people of Mickleover have always been very supportive of the event and we also look forward to welcoming experienced runners who are keen to log their times at the start of another busy race and marathon calendar.”
HUUB Events Race Director Claire Duffin continued: “So far we have around 400 people taking part in the ‘Great Northern’ this year and will be keeping registrations open until the last minute to ensure that everyone who wants to can enter.
“The event has been organised to suit both experienced and novice runners as well as family members of all ages.
“Both the 10K and half marathon courses are UKA measured and have an England Athletic licence so all runners will be chip timed.
“The 10k and Half Marathon course is relatively flat and the perfect training for the marathon season and the Fun Run is on a very flat and safe footpath which is ideal for young and novice runners.”
All finishers of the 10k and half marathon will receive a T-shirt with refreshments available at Mickleover Cricket Club. Prizes will be awarded to the top three men and ladies in both races. All finishers of the fun run will receive a medal to commemorate their achievements.
Race HQ is based at Mickleover Sports Club, the home of Mickleover Cricket Club where there will be free car parking, toilets and changing facilities, refreshments and entertainment for families and friends who are supporting the runners.
Entries for the 10k cost £15 for affiliated runners and £17 for unaffiliated runners and for the half marathon affiliated runners entry costs £18 and unaffiliated £20. Entry for the Family Fun Run is £5. Enter the event online.
